I was on leave one day when a colleague from the office called me with some news. He said, “Have you heard the rumors?” I replied, “What rumors?” He continued, “Sandy and Evans. Yesterday, the cleaner caught them kissing in the office, and now everyone is talking about it. Since you work with them, have you noticed anything?” I responded, “I can’t believe it. That can’t be true. Are you saying the cleaner didn’t see them coming? He didn’t knock? He’s lying.” I understood the implications and didn’t want to add fuel to the fire.

After hanging up, I called Evans. “Bro, what’s going on?” He asked, “What have you heard?” I relayed the colleague’s message. He explained, “What the cleaner saw wasn’t a kiss. When Sandy came in this morning, she just gave me a peck on the cheek. The cleaner might have seen it as he was walking in. It wasn’t anything serious.” I told him, “Well, people are saying you were caught kissing.”

I didn’t hear anything more about it until I returned to work and discovered that the cleaner had been fired and Sandy had been moved to another office. It saddened me that such a situation could lead to someone losing their job. I asked Evans about it, and he said, “With the way the rumors were spreading, we had to act to protect our reputations, so I spoke to HR. The cleaner was called in and admitted he was wrong for spreading the story. Next thing I knew, he was let go.” I warned him, “You guys need to be careful because many people believe what the cleaner said, and they’ll be watching you.”

A few weeks later, Evans came to the office looking worried. He said, “Do you know my wife has heard the rumors too? Someone called her and told her everything. Can you believe it?” I couldn’t imagine what he was going through, so I asked, “What does she think?” He replied, “She believes it. I’ve tried to explain, but you know how stubborn she is. She’s all over the place wanting to investigate.” I advised, “You two should lay low for a while before things escalate.” He said, “It’s over between me and Sandy. There’s no point in laying low.” I silently thanked the Lord for bringing things to a close.

I rarely saw Sandy anymore since her new office was far away. One day, I ran into her, and she cornered me. “Talk to your friend. I don’t understand why he’s letting this small issue ruin everything. He’s acting like a woman and doesn’t even answer my calls.” I suggested, “Why don’t you both just walk away from each other? Isn’t that the best option right now?” She replied, “Eventually, we will, but not just yet.” I thought to myself, “The devil is really at work here. She doesn’t want to let go.”

If you knew the kind of marriage Evans was in, you’d understand why he was so worried. His wife was more successful than he was, earning significantly more and not tolerating nonsense. She definitely called the shots in their relationship, which made Evans anxious about what she might do.

Several months later, the office atmosphere had calmed down. Everyone had moved on and forgotten about the rumors. One morning, I walked into the office and saw Sandy and Evans together as early as 7:00 AM. The tension was palpable, and their expressions gave them away. I greeted them and went to my corner. Sandy tried to joke with me, but I didn’t respond as she expected, so she quickly walked away. I asked Evans, “Are you two back together?” His response made me think how foolish they were. He said, “Sandy didn’t want to let things go, so she asked for a proper closure.”

What I found them doing was the “proper closure” that resembled a last supper. Who am I to judge? I just prayed for them.

On August 2nd, 2021, early on a Monday morning, I saw Evans on the phone, speaking harshly to someone. He didn’t even notice when I walked in. I overheard him saying, “If you were a little clever, you would have realized I wasn’t the one chatting with you. Have we ever chatted at this time before? Didn’t you find anything odd?” Then he added, “I guess you’re happy now, right? You got what you wanted. Clap for yourself.” I couldn’t hear the other person, but I pieced together that it had to be Sandra. I thought, “There’s trouble brewing.”

When he hung up, he said, “My brother, I’m dead.” I asked, “What’s wrong? Who’s giving you an early headache?” He explained, “I woke up this morning and saw a chat on my phone between me and Sandra at 1 AM. I don’t remember any of it because I slept through the night. I suspect my wife did something, but she hasn’t said anything. She’s acting normal, but that chat isn’t mine. I rushed to the office to call Sandra and confirm.” I asked, “So Sandy was chatting with your wife, thinking it was you?” “Exactly,” he replied. I asked, “I hope she didn’t say anything too revealing?” He exclaimed, “She dropped some serious lines. Would I be here if she hadn’t?” “Wow,” was all I could say.

For an entire week, Evans came to work looking miserable. He seemed unwell, often talking to himself, taking long breaks, and missing deadlines. I asked, “Has she still not mentioned it?” He replied, “No, and that’s even more concerning because I don’t know what she’s planning.” I suggested, “Why don’t you bring it up?” He said, “How do I start that conversation? Just walk up to her and talk? No way, I have to wait until she brings it up.” I insisted, “You’re the one worried, so you should initiate the conversation.” He replied, “My man, it’s not as easy as it sounds.”

On August 15th, 2021, I encountered Sandy and Evans again in the office. Sandra looked like she had been crying, while Evans appeared ready to explode. Evans’s wife had called Sandra the night before to inform her that she was waiting for the right moment to tell her husband. Sandra pleaded with her, explaining that the messages were just a joke. Evans’s wife responded, “I’ll show them to your husband and see if he finds it funny too.”

The situation was becoming increasingly tense. It felt like Evans’s wife was taking her time to slowly unravel everything. Evans took his annual leave, and two days later, Sandy also took hers. I stopped receiving updates. The news began to spread throughout the company. The last time I spoke to Evans, he blamed me for the rumors. He said, “You’re the only person we talk to. If it’s spreading, who else could it be?” He cut me off completely, but I knew who else he was confiding in, and according to that person, his wife had asked for a divorce, while Evans was desperately trying to change her mind. As for Sandra, she seemed fine, perhaps her husband wasn’t causing her the same stress that Evans was experiencing, or maybe she was just strong enough not to let it bother her.

Regardless of their troubles, whenever I kneel to pray, I ask God to help them, especially Evans, who seems to be suffering the most.
