The Curse of Three Lovers, Love Tragedy
Rosemond’s life is marked by heartbreak after losing two lovers, Prince and Mathew, to tragic deaths and Albert’s mysterious disappearance. Now facing rumors of a marine spirit curse, she fears losing her new suitor despite his confidence in love.
I still remember the heartache I experienced when Prince, my boyfriend, tragically passed away in an accident. It was an incredibly difficult time for me, and I felt as though my world had come to an end. Deep down, I believed he was my one true love and that I could never love anyone else after his death.
We had been together for nearly three years, and everything was falling into place for our future together. Prince had just landed a job and promised to marry me as soon as he secured his own place. Just a few months after starting his job, he was involved in a fatal accident with a company vehicle, and that marked the end of our beautiful relationship.
Over time, my heart began to heal, and I managed to move forward. I held onto his memories, but the pain of remembering him and our relationship, which was cut short by his untimely death, no longer stung as it once did.
Then Mathew entered my life. He was an ambitious man with a bright future ahead of him, having started his own company three years before we met. From the very beginning, we connected well, and eventually, he expressed his desire to be in a relationship with me. I agreed, and he mentioned that we could get married soon if I was ready. Unsure, I suggested we take our time.
Although we rarely discussed marriage, everything we did seemed to lead us in that direction. He introduced me to his parents, who welcomed me warmly, with his mother even calling me “in-law” right away. I took him to meet my family as well, and the reception was lovely. The rest was up to us to decide.
I vividly recall what he said that day: “It’s a boys' pool party, so you don’t have to come with me.” He grabbed his backpack and left for the party. Later that evening, around 6:30 PM, after returning from the kitchen, I noticed six missed calls on my phone—two from Mathew’s friend, one from his mother, two from my close friend Abena, and one from an unknown number.
I tried calling Mathew’s mom twice, but she didn’t answer. When I called Abena, she picked up immediately, her voice unusually loud. “Hey, I’ve been trying to reach you! Where have you been?” she asked, sounding alarmed. I replied, “I was in the kitchen. Is something wrong?” That’s when she delivered the devastating news…
“Mathew…he drowned.”
Prince had died in a car accident just when everything seemed to be going well for us. Now, Mathew, who had come into my life to help fill the void, had drowned just as things were aligning perfectly for us. It felt like a curse, as if I didn’t deserve happiness.
Twice was too much to bear, but the heart has a way of healing, no matter how deep the wounds. Then Albert found me. He was a good man who genuinely wanted to do right by me and our relationship, but at times, he seemed uncertain. He would say all the right things one day, only to hesitate the next.
Despite his fears, he took the necessary steps. He met my family and performed the traditional ‘knocking’ ceremony. He received the marriage list and even set a date for our wedding. But three months later, he vanished.
When I say vanished, I mean completely disappeared. To this day, I have no idea where he went, and his family didn’t provide any answers. They claimed Albert hadn’t told them where he was going and even asked me for his whereabouts.
It felt like a charade to cover up their cowardice. It seemed Albert had been pressured to believe there was something supernatural about the way my previous relationships ended. His family convinced him that if he married me, he would be the next victim of a supposed marine spirit that had claimed the lives of the men in my life.
I had endured too much pain to let Albert’s situation consume me as well. Eventually, my family returned the drink he had brought for the knocking ceremony, freeing me from that promise.
Now, there’s a man in my life who is doing everything he can to win my heart. I’m cautious, though. I’ve shared my past with him—how Prince and Mathew died, and how Albert disappeared out of fear. I’ve told him about the belief that I’m tied to a marine spirit that brings death to the men who come into my life.
He laughed and said, “I’m not superstitious. I know what I want, and it’s you.” A man in love may not be superstitious, but he can still act foolishly.
I like him. I appreciate his confidence and the energy he brings, but what if what people say about me is true? What if Mathew and Prince really did die because they got too close to my heart?
I’m scared. If that were to happen again, I might not survive it. I truly want to keep this one forever, but I can’t be certain, so I wait.
