Hi Pearl,

Letting you go was a difficult decision, even though I knew you had moved on. However, as I reflect on my blessings today, I thank God for your departure from my life, as it allowed me to meet my Angel. I appreciate that.

Every moment spent with you on campus was more precious than gold to me because you embodied everything I had ever dreamed of: an incredible girlfriend, a sister, and someone with whom I could share endless, heartfelt conversations. It was so affectionate to be seen everywhere with our hands intertwined, your head resting on my shoulder, and my arm around your waist. We truly seemed made for each other. Despite the challenges we faced as university students, our love helped us overcome each obstacle together.

My lovely Pearl, as I affectionately called you, you were aware of the plans I had for us and how I envisioned securing a good job after National Service and marrying you shortly thereafter. I was determined not to lose you to misunderstandings, distance, or petty gossip. I had promised to embrace your imperfections, as I had my own. So what went wrong? Why couldn’t you hold on just a little longer? I suspected you had started seeing someone else right after I left campus for my National Service, but I was willing to go the extra mile and keep my promise of marrying you exactly two years after finding a job. I trusted you and chose not to dwell on it; perhaps you were just friends needing companionship while I was away.

I noticed a gradual shift in your attitude. You seemed to lose interest in the things that had once kept us connected, especially since we couldn’t see each other often. I asked you repeatedly, and you always had an excuse, but I was determined to hold on to my Pearl. I understood that women sometimes go through mood swings and need space, so I thought it was okay. For two months, I was the only one reaching out, and even when you called, our conversations rarely lasted more than five minutes, which was unusual for us. You grew distant, and our chats became lackluster. You mentioned needing “me time,” and I reluctantly accepted it. Little did I know that this would mark the end of our love story. Pearl, I never wanted a ‘once upon a time’ with you; I wanted a ‘happily ever after.’ My wishes were never fulfilled, and today I find myself without them. It seems we were never on the same page; you had your own plans.

The picture I saw on your sister’s status, captioned “Thank you, our husband, for the treat,” shattered my heart. In that moment, I lost my sense of self and needed to confront what felt real. I realized I had been kept in the dark all along. There you were, showing affection to another guy. For a moment, I thought I was misinterpreting the images, but before I could take a closer look, they were gone. When did all this happen? I just needed someone to tell me it wasn’t true. Five years of our relationship couldn’t just go to waste, especially not when I was on the verge of securing a job after National Service. Although our relationship had become distant after school, this wasn’t what we had promised each other. Distance and the lack of physical contact had managed to sever what had once united us.

I needed answers to the many questions swirling in my mind. Then, your sister had an honest conversation with me. “Pearl has been seeing this guy for almost five months now,” she revealed. I was devastated. The pain in my heart and soul was unbearable. Everything became clearer. The mood swings, the desire for solitude, the disinterest in our once-enjoyable conversations—it all made sense now.

You could have told me yourself. At least it would have spared me the emotional turmoil I put myself through. But when I confronted you, you said you couldn’t handle a long-distance relationship again and needed someone nearby. Nearby? We had been together for years, with just one year apart. You knew it wouldn’t be like that forever. Your being in Kumasi and me in Accra for a brief period couldn’t have spelled the end for us. It hurt deeply, but I had to accept reality and move on.

As I write today, I find myself grateful for the heartbreak that allowed me to see life from a different perspective. It gave me the chance to improve myself and to meet the Angel who is now in my life. I may not have everything, but I can say I am comfortable in life by God’s grace. I didn’t fall apart when you left; instead, I grew stronger and found support from someone who stands by me every step of the way. I appreciate what you’ve started doing—checking in on me from time to time. It makes me feel valued.

When you closed the chapter of our lives, I found a new author. My life is now filled with beautiful stories to share. The good news is that my wedding is scheduled for October 17, 2020, and you are invited to witness what the Lord can do. It has truly been the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in my eyes.

It’s me,

Bob
