Love, Loss and the Curse That Won't Let Go Story
Rosemond’s life is marked by tragic losses in love—Prince dies in an accident, Mathew drowns, and Albert disappears, fueling rumors of a curse or marine spirit. Now she fears loving again while a new suitor insists on staying.
I remember the heartache I endured when Prince, my boyfriend, tragically passed away in an accident. It was an incredibly difficult time for me, and I felt as though my life had come to an end. Deep down, I believed he was my one true love, and I couldn't imagine loving anyone else after his death.
We had been together for nearly three years, and everything was falling into place for our future together. Prince had secured a job and promised to marry me once he had his own place. Just a few months after starting his job, he was involved in an accident with a company vehicle, and that was the end of him. It also marked the end of our blossoming relationship.
Over time, my heart began to heal, and I managed to move on. I held onto his memories, but they no longer caused me the pain they once did when I thought of him, of us, and the relationship that was cut short by his untimely death.
Then Mathew entered my life. He was a promising individual with a lot going for him. He had started his own company three years before we met. From the very beginning, we connected well, and eventually, he proposed that we enter into a relationship. I accepted, and he mentioned something along the lines of, “We could get married soon if you’re ready.” Unsure, I suggested we take our time.
Although we rarely discussed marriage, everything we did seemed to lead us in that direction. He took me home to meet his parents, who welcomed me warmly. His mother even began calling me “in-law” right away. I introduced him to my family as well, and he received a lovely reception. The rest was up to us to decide.
I vividly recall what he said that day: “It’s a boys' pool party, so you don’t have to come with me.” He grabbed his backpack and left for the party. Later that evening, around 6:30 PM, after returning from the kitchen, I noticed six missed calls on my phone—two from Mathew’s friend, one from his mother, two from my close friend Abena, and one from an unknown number.
I tried calling Mathew’s mom twice, but she didn’t answer. When I called Abena, she picked up immediately, her voice unusually loud. “Hey, I’ve been trying to reach you! Where have you been?” she asked, sounding alarmed. I replied, “I was in the kitchen for a bit. Is something wrong?” Then she dropped the devastating news…
“Mathew…he drowned.”
Prince had died in a car accident just when everything seemed to be going well for us. Now, Mathew, who had come to fill the void, drowned just as our stars were aligning. It felt like a curse, as if I didn’t deserve happiness in my life.
Twice was too much to bear, but the heart has a way of healing, no matter how deep the wounds. Then Albert found me. He was a good man who wanted to do right by me and our relationship, but sometimes he seemed uncertain. He would say all the right things one day, only to hesitate the next.
Despite his fears, he took the necessary steps. He met my family and performed the traditional ‘knocking’ rite. He received the marriage list and even set a date for our wedding. But three months later, he vanished.
When I say vanished, I mean completely disappeared. To this day, I have no idea where he went, and his family didn’t provide any answers. They claimed Albert hadn’t told them where he was going and even asked me for his whereabouts.
It felt like a charade to cover their cowardice. It seemed Albert had been pressured to believe there was something supernatural about the way my previous relationships ended. His family convinced him that if he married me, he would be the next victim of a marine spirit that supposedly haunted me, striking down the men who entered my life.
I had been hurt too much to let Albert’s situation consume me as well. Eventually, my family returned the drink he had brought for the knocking ceremony, freeing me from that promise.
Now, there’s a man in my life who is doing everything he can to win my heart. I’m being cautious, though. I’ve shared my past with him—how Prince and Mathew died, and how Albert disappeared out of fear. I’ve told him about the belief that I’m married to a marine spirit that brings death to the men who come into my life.
He laughed and said, “I’m not a superstitious fool. I know what I want, and it’s you that I want to be with.” A man in love may not be superstitious, but he can still act foolishly.
I like him. I appreciate his confidence and the energy he brings, but what if what people say about me is true? What if Mathew and Prince really did die because they got too close to my heart?
I’m scared. If that were to happen again, I might not survive it. I truly want to keep this one forever, but I can’t be certain, so I wait.
