She Chose Wealth Over True Love And Lost Everything
A devoted man shares the heartbreak of losing the woman he planned to marry after she chose a secret relationship with her married boss. A powerful story about love, trust, betrayal, and consequences.
Dear Philip,
I believe now is the right moment for me to reply to the message you sent on the night of August 11, 2020. When I first received it, I remember texting you to confirm if it was indeed meant for me. You replied, “Who else would I send such a message to?” Unfortunately, I wasn’t even aware that we were in a relationship.
We initially connected through a Facebook group. I made a comment, and shortly after, you added your own response beneath mine. I found it amusing and appreciated your way with words. That was the beginning of our interactions. Moments later, you sent me a friend request, which I accepted without hesitation. It’s a digital world, and we’re free to connect with whomever we choose. From that point on, you engaged with everything I posted on my wall, and we enjoyed some great conversations.
One evening, while I was asleep, you messaged me saying, “I like your personality and would love to get to know you better. Why don’t you share your number so I can call you sometime?” I didn’t think twice and gave you my number. That same night, you called, and I must admit, you have a knack for keeping a conversation lively. You made me laugh and convinced me that you were a vibrant person, which is why I agreed to meet you in person. I was so impressed by your online persona that I was eager to see what you were like in real life.
When we met, we enjoyed a meal and drinks before calling it a night. A week later, I showed you where I lived, and you arrived with a gift. I was thrilled to have you there and appreciated the thoughtful present. On my birthday in June this year, you took me out for dinner and introduced me to someone as your girlfriend. I laughed, thinking it was just one of your usual jokes. Honestly, I didn’t even consider asking about it. To me, we were just friends caught up in a fun dynamic.
That night, I noticed the look in your eyes and sensed you had something on your mind. You seemed buoyant, like a boy in love. I waited for you to say something, but you didn’t until the night ended and we went home. That was the closest we ever got romantically. You never proposed, and I never accepted. I thought to myself, “Maybe he’s unsure about me,” but if you had proposed, I can imagine myself saying no because you seemed too good to be true.
After that night, your messages became less frequent. You didn’t call as often, nor did you seek me out like before. I assumed you were busy or dealing with something that required your attention. I didn’t ask why because I felt it wasn’t my place to do so. You called when you wanted, and it was fine if you chose not to. However, when the silence became too loud, I sent you a message on August 9: “Hey Philip, are we fighting, or are you just too busy to check up on me these days? Anyway, I hope you’re doing well. Stay blessed.”
I saw that you read my message but didn’t respond. It sat unanswered in your inbox. I noticed the blue tick and wondered, “Is something wrong with him?” On August 10, I called you twice, but you didn’t pick up. I thought, “We all have our battles to fight. Maybe his struggles prevent him from responding to calls and messages.” I decided I wouldn’t reach out again until you did.
Then, on August 11, I woke up to your message:
“Dear Lucy,
It pains me to say this, but I can’t continue any longer. During our time together, you’ve shown me a depth of love I haven’t found in any other woman. It made me happy and made me want you more, but I can’t continue this relationship. You’ve been a wonderful girlfriend, and I appreciate it, but we need to break up before things get out of hand.”
I read your message repeatedly, trying to understand where it fit into everything. “I can’t continue this relationship…” Which relationship? “You’ve been a wonderful girlfriend…” To whom? How could you date someone who didn’t even know she was dating you? I needed clarification, and you said, “Who else would I send such a message to?”
Let me share what I did after reading your message…
I pretended to be heartbroken. I cried myself to sleep and woke up at dawn to post on my status, “Love isn’t fair. How could he leave just like that?” The next day, I went to the same bar we visited and ordered the same drink we had. I drank too much and ended up intoxicated and vomiting. A stranger took me home that night. I ignored calls from my friends because I knew they would try to console me, and I didn’t want to be consoled. Your kind of heartbreak cuts deeper than a sharp knife. I didn’t eat for three days, lost some weight, and my face became a canvas of tears. How else could I act out a heartbreak that didn’t exist?
When you break up with someone who wasn’t aware you were dating, she pretends to be hurt to act as if she’s heartbroken.
