The Trap That Almost Ruined My Love Relationship

My girlfriend and I have been together for almost three years. We are both students at the same university in Nigeria, and we live in a campus dormitory together with my elder brother.

For a while, my brother dated a girl named Ifunaya, whose graduation was ahead of us since she was the last to occupy her place in our department. Unfortunately, she and my girlfriend were never on good terms and used to often compete with each other. After my brother’s split with Ifunaya, the animosity that my girlfriend had towards her changed into strong dislike.

I did not stop communicating with Ifunaya, believing it was a respectful act since her was my brother's ex, even after the breakup and Ifunaya's relocation to Lagos.

One day, a girl called Cindy sent me a message and identified herself as Ifunaya's cousin. She said she had just moved near our campus for an internship and was looking for friends. Cindy told me that Ifunaya had given her my number. I was aware that this might not be taken well by my brother and my girlfriend, but I opted to be nice to her, thinking that Cindy was an innocent party in all of this.

We started to have a daily chat. My girlfriend was aware that I was frequently using my phone, but that was not a sign that I was smitten with Cindy. There was some tension between my girlfriend and me, and chatting with Cindy was a good distraction.

On a weekend, Cindy asked me if I wanted to join her for a fun day in the city. The whole of it was a good relaxing time for me to talk amongst us and go for a walk. 

We went out together to find a place to stay when it started to rain. We kissed goodbye then That was how I felt when I reached home after more than a day though my heart was light and I felt like a new lover again.

After a few days, she said, "Let’s go swimming together." I said yes, mainly to take pics and watch her stuff. While she was swimming, I had her phone and saw that Ifunaya had sent her a message. I found that strange as she had told me that they hardly spoke. My interest was piqued, and I opened their chat.

What I came across was unbelievable.

Ifunaya and Cindy had come up with a plot: Cindy's role was to win my heart, which would cause me to divorce my girlfriend. Then, when I was alone and hurt, Cindy would leave me.

I was laughing at my own naivety. Cindy was a remarkable performer. I kept the secret of my discovery from her and we said goodnight in the regular manner but this time there were no kisses involved.

At that moment, I saw it clearly that part of the reason why I hadn't worked on my relationship with my girlfriend was Cindy's influence. That night, I got home and hugged my girlfriend so tight that she almost lost her breath and then asked, "I'm not used to this side of you. What is the reason?"

She never got a hint of what had been going on. On that same night, I permanently removed Ifunaya and Cindy's contact from my iPad. I was through with their tricks once and for all.
