The Night I Only Paid for My Coke

It was a Friday night when she was meant to visit my place. She possessed the keys, yet she was unaware of my absence, so I sent her the following message: “It is possible that you will get there prior to me. I am in the city getting a few things, but I will be back shortly.”

Her response was very prompt: “I am also in the city with some friends. We are having dinner and doing some catching up.”

I was curious to know their location and she sent me the address. Then she offered me to come along and we would leave together, and I said yes. There were three ladies at the table. I was not very sure about joining them, but they all said at once, “Do not be shy, just come and sit with us,” and I did. I was already very full but I ordered a bottle of Coke to be a part of the group anyway.

When the check came, I paid for my Coke while they were digging into their purses to pay for their food. My girlfriend was not happy on our way back home; "Why did you do that? You could have not paid for the Coke at all and we would be sure you are broke. That is so embarrassing."

She thought that I should have acted like a real man and paid for their meals or at least offered to do so, so that it would at least look like I was trying. The amount they spent was a complete mystery to me, and I didn’t want to create a wrong image. A question came to my mind, and I replied, “You would have paid if I hadn’t been there, wouldn’t you? Then what’s your reason for that?”

She again said that I should not do that next time. I said that I would do it over and over again. She replied, “I know you’re a miser, but the whole world shouldn’t know about it.” I just laughed. If that’s what it means to be a miser, then I do wear that label proudly.
